Hospital & unit toolkit

Printable starting points for unit leaders working on staff well-being.

Burnout prevention checklist

  • Staffing ratios reviewed against acuity, not just census
  • Break coverage actually protected/enforced
  • Debrief offered after critical incidents or patient deaths
  • Schedule requests honored within stated policy
  • Anonymous well-being pulse survey each quarter

Team debrief template

  • What happened — factual, no blame framing
  • What went well — name it explicitly
  • What was hard — give space for silence, not just talkers
  • What we need — resources, support, follow-up
  • One takeaway — something concrete for next time

Recognition ideas

  • Specific, timely shout-outs (not generic "great job team")
  • Handwritten notes from leadership after hard shifts
  • "Code Lavender" style rapid support response after critical events
  • Protected, uninterrupted meal breaks — treated as non-negotiable

Meeting guide: staff well-being check-in

  • Open with 2 minutes of silence/breathing, not straight into metrics
  • Ask "what's one thing making this job harder than it needs to be right now?"
  • Close every meeting with a concrete follow-up owner and date
